Abstract

The author discusses problems that can arise in the use of transference interpretations with two main groups of children who cannot symbolise: borderline children and children on the autistic spectrum. She proposes that the aim of the therapist’s interventions is to allow the child to establish the right distance to the oedipal couple in the transference, and in this way to support the capacity for symbolisation. Children on the autistic spectrum (Tustin’s «shutters-out») are too far away; vignettes are provided to illustrate a number of means of establishing contact other than the purely semantic function of verbal interpretation. In contrast, borderline children (Tustin’s «drawers-in») are too close and entangled: in work with them, the boundaries of the physical setting are particularly crucial to the process of distinguishing between self and other and between reality and phantasy. Interpretation is discussed with regard to phrasing as well as to non-semantic elements, and some functions of games, special toys, nursery rhymes, stories and videos are considered as well as the use of physical contact.
