Abstract

Social work is a global profession that is universally connected by a pursuit of social justice (IFSW 2012). Systemic racism impacts the social welfare and progression of Black professionals, children, families, and communities globally (Christian 2019; Dettlaff and Boyd 2020; Krakouer 2020). Although the murder of George Floyd in 2020 reignited antiracist practice discourse within social work (Tedam and Cane 2022), this was not an isolated event. Racism within social work institutions has been a long-standing issue, evidenced by the paucity of Black leadership and the persistent overrepresentation of Black children within social work systems (Antwi-Boasiako et al., 2022). This reflection is informed by a three-year period within my role as a Service Manager for antiracist practice within Children’s Social Care (CSC), which was created in response to 2020’s year of racial reckoning. My core responsibility is to oversee the development and delivery of a CSC antiracist strategy. My experience as a strategic antiracist leader offers insight that transformational leadership may be a helpful philosophy for leaders to adopt, to dismantle racism within social work institutions.
