Abstract
The author studies the process of separation between a mother and a baby by examining two states of mind, that of feeling a part of the other and that of feeling separate. She focuses on five areas: the mother's return to work, the importance of visual experience for the baby, a crisis in the feeding relationship, difficulties in sleeping apart and the way the baby experiences her father as different from her mother.
