Abstract

Racial preoccupations are undoubtedly present in one form or another in the privacy of our daily thoughts and feelings, imagination and dream life. And whether explicit or subtle, these conscious and unconscious fantasies and feelings are embedded in our social world and institutional structures, operating intergenerationally and manifest in crude or sophisticated 'racial scenes' of contemporary life. The consulting room is no exception since these racial scenes are part of the normal fabric of our cultural life, saturating our consciousness and very being, not something separate from the psyche but constitutive of it.
