Abstract
Symbolic gestures and play show that when babies feel they cannot turn towards their mother in the external world, they may rely on unconscious thinking and feelings to restore their relationship with the good internal mother. This process, which appears to be conducive to emotional and cognitive development, enables them to turn back to their mother in external reality.
