Abstract

Intrigued by the notion that writers are shaped by and write out of their landscapes, I can easily yearn for wilder, remoter places in contrast to my own suburban existence, albeit that it is an attractive suburbia: an easy walk to the North Downs, yet a reasonable commute to London. This is the landscape that I live in, and usually work in, that has ingrained over thirty years, a pleasing workaday landscape in my eyes. But I have come to the ruggedness of North Wales to this writing workshop, with the intention of exploring my relatedness to the land and to find a means to express it. As Kim Atkinson suggests—to be of the landscape but not bound by it—to allow myself to be a nomad. This article, part memoir, part nature writing, attempts to explore a relatedness to landscape and the natural world, suggesting an inner landscape viewed through the lens of attachment theory. Links are made with professional development in the context of consulting to change, and the potential for creativity.
