Intrigued by the notion that writers are shaped by and write out of their landscapes, I can easily yearn for wilder, remoter places in contrast to my own suburban existence, albeit that it is an attractive suburbia: an easy walk to the North Downs, yet a reasonable commute to London. This is the landscape that I live in, and usually work in, that has ingrained over thirty years, a pleasing workaday landscape in my eyes. But I have come to the ruggedness of North Wales to this writing workshop, with the intention of exploring my relatedness to the land and to find a means to express it. As Kim Atkinson suggests—to be of the landscape but not bound by it—to allow myself to be a nomad. This article, part memoir, part nature writing, attempts to explore a relatedness to landscape and the natural world, suggesting an inner landscape viewed through the lens of attachment theory.
