Abstract

This paper reflects on an experience of researching and consulting in complex and turbulent environments. It has grown out of my experience as a social work manager, organizational consultant and finally as a researcher. I will consider how the theoretical construct of the Organization in the Mind can provide a deeper understanding and insight into individual experiences in occupational role. I will demonstrate through research material and examples from consultancy practice how personal and interpersonal narratives and the understandings arising thereof can in some ways be limited. I will suggest that these individual descriptions can also provide insight into the emotional experience of working environments and the culture, context and climate that the individual in role occupies and works within. I will contend that through considering and linking context to individual experience further meaning can be found beyond the individual.
